MAP Scores and Results

Dear Parents,

The Grade 1 and Grade 2 teachers have been reviewing the results from the MAP testing and have identified key areas where our students need the most support in both Math and English. Based on the data, we have selected skills to work on as a class until the end of the school year. Some results show a low mark as a whole group, and this is because we have not yet taught this unit in Math or English. An example of this is Statistics. Once that unit has been taught, the results on the next MAP test should improve. Following is a list of skills that each grade and class are focusing on. These skills were generally weak within the whole group of students and are areas that we are aiming to improve. One main goal all classes are working on are increasing vocabulary, and this will also reflect in the marks of the next MAP test.

Grade 1 Math

Measurement- put objects in order from shortest to longest and narrowest to widest
- identifying the days of the week and which day comes after

Number Sense- children can count forward up to 100; skip count by 2, 5, and 10 starting at any number
- recognize the number word for numbers up to 100

Grade 1 Reading

- identifies basic punctuation such as ? ! . " "
- put words into alphabetical (ABC) order
- understanding the vocabulary of uppercase of lowercase letters (capital and small letters) - including knowing the difference in letters that are the same- Ss Xx Zz
- matching 2 words with same beginning, middle or ending sounds (eg. stomp, stick)
- identifies a complete sentence and a question sentence

Grade 2 Math

Measurement- estimates and measures length of an object to the nearest inch and centimeter
- uses a calendar as a tool to answer questions

Number Sense- recognize the number word for numbers up to 999
- identifies the number that is 1 more and 1 less up to 999

Grade 2 Reading and Language Usage

Reading Comprehension- identifies main idea and details in a short story
- identifies setting, characters and feelings in a story

Writing Process- recognizes errors in spelling, punctuation and capitalisation

Grammar- use present, past and future tense of verbs

These skills will be taught through the remainder of the school year. Some of these skills can be worked on at home. Thank you for your continued support of your child's growth in learning.
